Shopping List ยท Last updated: October 27, 2026

Shopping List ("the app") is an Android app for keeping shopping lists grouped by shop. This policy explains what data the app handles and where it goes.

Data stored on your phone

The app stores the groups and items you enter (names, notes, which shops an item belongs to, whether it was checked, and the "Do we have it?" mark), and your preferences for language, theme, text size and which groups are open or closed. This data is saved in the app's private storage on your phone. The app has no server, no account of its own, and no internet permission: it cannot send data anywhere by itself.

Android may include the app's data in your phone's own Google backup, as it does for other apps, depending on your phone's backup settings.

Shared list (optional)

You can share a list with another person by choosing a file, for example in a shared Google Drive folder, with Android's own file picker. The app then reads and writes only that one file, through the app that provides it (such as the Google Drive app), and remembers which file you chose. It cannot see any other file.

The shared file contains your lists: groups, items, notes, checked items, and when they were changed or deleted. It does not contain your preferences. Anyone who can open that file (for example, the people the folder is shared with) can read it. The file is stored wherever you chose to keep it and is subject to that provider's terms and privacy policy; for Google Drive, that is Google's. You can delete the file at any time.

"Disconnect" in the app's Settings stops the app from using the file and releases its access.

Earlier versions (1.2 and before)

Versions 1.1 and 1.2 offered an optional Google sign-in to back up the list to Google Drive, using the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file permission. With it, those versions could only create and update their own backup file, shopping-list-backup.json, and read your Google account name and email address to show which account was connected. Version 1.3 removed the sign-in and deletes that stored name and email address from the phone. You can remove the access granted to earlier versions from your Google account settings at any time. Their use of information received from Google APIs adhered to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

What the app does not do

Deleting your data

Uninstalling the app deletes all data stored on the phone. A shared list file stays where it is until you delete it yourself.
